The State of the Craft
Over at Croq Zine, whether you're a hardcore crafter, just dabbling or somewhere in between, they'd like to hear your thoughts about the state of the craft for 2009.
The question inspired me to think about the state of my craft. I'm feeling pretty optimistic in general, due in large part to the incredible events of the past week. But also because this year I really applied myself to Persuede and I'm happy with the results and looking forward to whatever comes next.
I've never worked at something I LOVED. A job was something to endure, something that paid the bills, something that had moments of interest but I wasn't personally bereft without it. The work that I do for Persuede, designing jewelry, interacting with customers, figuring out how to translate a feeling into substance, is so deeply satisfying I can't imagine doing anything else.
And it is hard work. One of the most difficult aspects is being alone for most of the day in my studio -- no office chatter! But at the end of the day, to know that I achieved my goal and someone, some where, will respond to/wear/celebrate in a piece of jewelry I made is....well, it's awesome.
I feel very lucky to have this opportunity. And I thank all of you who've taken this ride with me and continue to do so. That's my state of the union for 2009. More bliss!
